2000+ Mashups

In the world of Web 2.0, one of the more appreciated feature is the possibility to mix applications. In the last six month we have written about lots of mashup applications...but there is someone that has done a great work...reviewing more than 2000 different mashups!
i'm speaking about Programmable Web, a Web 2.0 directory focused on this kind of applications. You can find every kind of mushups, from maps to travel, from video to news, from shopping to messaging. You can have an overview of what is listed with the pie here on the right. Click on it to go directly to ProgammableWeb site.

From Programmable Web Mashup Page:

What do you get when you mix 450 APIs thousands of developers around the world, some hacking, and a lot of innovative ideas? You get a big universe of mashups with a sample of 2000 now listed hereat ProgrammableWeb.

Grapheety

Grapheety - Tag Your World allows people to easily tag their stories and pictures onto a map. Google Map is used in this mashup. People can search the map or browse locations they visit, or may want to learn more about.

You can explore the world or your own neighborhood with Grapheety or share an experience for someone else to discover. It claims very smartly that “Graffiti is a crime, but Grapheety is a Social Responsibility”.

Going on a vacation to Paris? You could check it out here on Grapheety. Or you have a great story about your favorite hangout in town? Tag it on, to share with the world. Tagging a story is just like pin the tail on the donkey. Except instead of a donkey, it’s a globe, and instead of a tail it’s a story with pictures.

SecretPrices

SecretPrices.com allows online shoppers to research products, compare prices and find special discounts. Every month merchants and manufacturers release hundreds of money saving promotions through mediums such as online coupons, rebates, and other promotional discounts. While savvy online bargain hunters have always looked to websites dedicated to listing these product deals and coupons, other consumers often unknowingly miss out on the savings. Consumers know that while online shopping can save money, it is often a time-consuming process. That’s where SecretPrices.com helps by combining data from several sources including Shopping.com, Amazon, and Epinions and presenting it to them on a single platform.

QEDWiki (By IBM)

IBM QEDWiki is a browser-based assembly canvas used to create simple mash-ups. A mash-up maker is an assembly environment in which the creator of a mash-up uses software components (or services) made available by content providers. QEDWiki is a unique Wiki framework in that it provides both Web users and developers with a single Web application framework for hosting and developing a broad range of Web 2.0 applications. QEDWiki can be used for a wide variety of Web applications, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Web content management for a typical collection of Wiki pages
  • traditional form processing for database-oriented CRUD (Create/Read/Update/Delete) applications
  • document-based collaboration
  • rich interactive applications that bind together disparate services
  • situational applications (or mash-ups).

QEDWiki also provides Web application developers with a flexible and extensible framework to enable do-it-yourself (DIY) rapid prototyping. Business users can quickly prototype and build ad hoc applications without depending on software engineers. QEDWiki provides mash-up enablers (programmers) with a framework for building reusable, tag-based commands. These commands (or widgets) can then be used by business users who wish to create their own Web applications.

Pipes (By Yahoo)

Yahoo just went live with Yahoo Pipes, a service that allows you to create your own mashups.

Pipes provides a drag and drop editor that lets you find data sources, mix them up and spit them out - in short, a way to combine feeds in different ways. Examples include an NYTimes-Flickr mashup that matches NYTimes headlines to relevant images, and an aggregated news alert of Yahoo, Google, MSN, Findory, Bloglines and Technorati. The service is social, in the sense that you can have an avatar, view all the mashups from a certain user and even edit these existing mashups to create something new. The editor, in fact, is particularly slick: it’s ajaxy, rather than Flash-powered, and represents actions with modules connected by lines.

Pipes is still a little geeky, admittedly, but it’s a great first step in creating a mashup tool for the masses. Let us know if you create anything cool.

Delexa

Delexa.org: Web Domains by Topic: Very unique mashup that uses the top 50,000 sites as determined by Alexa and del.icio.us tags to organize domains by topic. It can be used to find high quality links in the topic area of your choice that is both topically related and likely to be high-powered.

CensusDashboard

Census Dashboard: A Flex-based mashup using two StrikeIron APIs, Zip Code Information and Population Demographics By ZIP Code, plus the Yahoo Maps API to give detailed information for a specific US zip code. (If you want to learn more about how this was built, along with Flex code, see creator Andrew Trice’s good writeup here.)

MapDango

mapdango was conceived with the goal of providing spatial context and meaning for items of interest to the general public. Rather than viewing cars, jobs, vacation rentals, or personals in a tabular list, mapdango was created to give users the ability to see search results in both a list AND a map. With that goal in mind, the site has created a new "Web 2.0" application that combines the best of both worlds: Vast.com's expansive classified listings and Google's user-friendly maps.

Webmunism

Webmunism is a combination of a search engine and a multimedia gallery.

At Webmunism you can search and browse photos, videos, albums and books, all automatically united into categories called ‘webmunes’. Webmunes are composed of all types of media which is automatically categorized by their engine and placed into the webmune. You can join webmunes and become a comrade, communicate with other comrades, create a free blog and profile, and find others who share similar interests.

The media displayed and categorized on Webmunism are drawn from other well-known content services on the web. For example; photos from Flickr, videos from Youtube, music data from last.fm, book details from Amazon, and subject headings and brief descriptions from Wikipedia.

Proto

Proto “Using our visual building environment, you can combine web services like Yahoo! Maps and Salesforce.com with desktop apps, like iTunes and Outlook. Build complete ‘composite apps’ in under an hour, and drop into the VBA IDE when you need to write a little code.” Certainly this is a good enterprise mashup story with its ability to pull together data from the desktop, behind the firewall and the types of APIs listed here.

TripperMap

Trippermap.com is a web service that allows you to put a flash based world map on your own website or blog. Trippermap will then automatically search your photos at Flickr for location information and plot the photos on your own Trippermap, on your own website.
It's as simple as tagging your photos with a city and country name!

Trippermap also supports photos that have been geotagged or photos that have location data encoded in their EXIF properties.

Trippermap now supports Flickr's new mapping tools so you can drag your photos onto the map at Flickr and have them show up on your Trippermap and then see them using Google Earth.

Our Google Earth Geotagger now also updates your map at Flickr straight away so if you need more detailed maps while geotagging your photos check out our video tutorial. It only takes one click to geotag Flickr photos using Google Earth.

Trippermap = Flickrmap. Due to trademark requirements we've updated our name to Trippermap which reflects out focus on travel photography and mapping all the great trips you've been on.
