GizmoCall

Gizmo Call - an online service that makes VoIP phone calls possible from any web browser. It works via a Flash plugin, which enables users to make calls simply by typing a phone number into a text-field in a browser. Users can also use URLs like http://gizmocall.com/18005551212 (that link is an example only and will not work). Gizmo Call is separate from SIPphone's other app, The Gizmo Project, which is a download VoIP app like Skype.

You do need to download a 1MB Flash plugin for Gizmo Call to work, so it's not a download-free browser app. However it's a once-only install and it lowers the bar for consumers wanting to start using VoIP. I myself am trying to use VoIP more in my life and telling family members about it too (of course poor broadband service is an issue here in my country!).

Gizmo Call is a nice step forward in VoIP, because users don't need to download a big client and run a traditional installer. They don't even need to setup an account. After the Flash plugin is installed, users can immediately make calls - albeit limited to 5 free minutes of calling per day "to just about any phone number". They can get 10 minutes free calling if they register with an email address and can also buy Call Out minutes. Besides PSTN phones, Gizmo Call users can call for free Google Talk users, Windows Live users, Gizmo Project users and any SIP address/device. There's also a feature enabling users to customize their CallerID, so when they make a web call it can appear to come from their mobile or office phone. Plus, being a browser-based service, users can integrate Gizmo Call into their blogs and social network pages.

It’s the individual who has video, photos or audio that showcases their expertise, creativity, talents, profession, business, services, etc., but doesn’t have the time or energy to figure out how to convert all that multimedia into a story and get it out to their audience. This person is smart, maybe even tech-savvy, but hates to waste time trying to figure out technology that’s meant to make their lives simpler—but actually does the opposite.

Think of hobbyists who blog about their passion; creative professionals like videographers, photographers, artists, designers, performers; service professionals like realtors, architects, tutors; businesses like tour operators, destination travel agents, restaurants; a mom working from home; reviewers who critique products or services; small businesses selling products online… Mixpo offers endless possibilities for everyday people like these.

We understand their needs for simplicity and easily managing their rich media across various online sites. We know that multimedia can tangibly benefit them in their life pursuits.

SpashCast

Splashcast is a little hard to describe, but once you get it it makes sense. It’s a Flash media player where the user can make various channels of content - including text, video, pictures, and audio files - and then embed the player containing those channels on a website. It basically incorporates functionality lots of other embeddable products. YouTube videos, photo slides shows like those offered by Slide, podcasts feeds, etc. can all be added as channels and will take up a fraction of the screen real estate required by all of those other services. For already busy websites, the Splashcast player is much easier to stomach than 3-4 widgets from separate companies.

Each channel of content also has a RSS feed, so interested viewers can subscribe to it and not have to come back to your website for access.

Splashcast will host content directly, but the real utility comes from plugging in videos from Youtube, photos from Flickr, etc., so that you can keep your media where you want to and not have to copy it over to Splashcast. You can even add voice overs to any of the show segments as Marshall has done below.

Minggl

Minggl, an Austin, Texas-based service, offers a new browser toolbar/plugin for users of Facebook and MySpace. ou start by entering your usernames and passwords for MySpace and Facebook. Then, when you’re visiting a compatible social network, Minggl pops up a little box at the top right (the “MiNGGL Social Palette”) and allows you to add that user to your “multi-site friends list”. This basically provides easy access to your contacts in the sidebar, and allows you to search them or browse by tags.

Users can also annotate their social networking pages with “notes” - you can add images, sounds and text to your profile on Facebook or MySpace, all neatly integrated so it looks like part of the profile page. These notes can be made viewable by all Minggl users, or just your friends. Other features includes the ability to jump straight to your various profiles, send messages and invite friends. In short: Minggl is a way to aggregate your friends (a bit like Profilactic) and annotate your profile.

FunkyCall

FunkyCall is a new phone-based service. It provides funny, pre-recorded voice mail (or live call) messages to send to your friends’ phones - stuff like a birthday greeting from Yoda, or a Valentines Day message from George W Bush. But they’ve also embraced user-generated content - users can upload their own calls to send to friends or share, as well as rating, favoriting and commenting on existing clips. You can also embed clips in MySpace, hi5, Piczo, Facebook and blogs using the Flash player above (RSS readers, click here to see it). That could provide a nice viral element. I’ve no idea whether the service will take off (perhaps not), but at least it scores points for a little originality.

Zoho Notebook

Zoho Notebook is an online app that works in both Firefox and IE browsers. You can create many different types of content, including text, image, audio, video, drawings. With audio, Zoho Notebook comes with a recorder - or you can get your audio from the Web or in your file system. And with the video, you can insert it from a service like YouTube, or record from your webcam straight into Notebook. Zoho Notebook will also come with a browser plug-in, similar to Google Notebook.

It's also a content aggregator and you can add files, pull in content via RSS, integrate office content (Zoho Writer, spreadsheets, presentations, calendars, etc) and even full-fledged applications can be aggregated into Notebook - for example from Zoho Creator. In some ways the aggregation parts resemble a personalized start page.

The best part of Zoho Notebook though is its collaboration features. You can share a whole Notebook, or just pages - and even just parts of pages, which Raju calls "sharing at the content level". It enables collaborative editing, so that more than one person can edit a notebook at a time. It also has version control too and access controls. A neat value add is that you can show the Skype status of the users.

Glee

Glee.com is a “professional networking site” from Community Connect, which already has more than 16 million users across its niche social networks, and uses the same software as the basis for all its sites. It’s a fairly accomplished platform, allowing users to choose from some default profile styles, add a custom background image or color and insert certain types of html code. There’s also photo hosting, an iFilm-powered video section, groups, forums and live chat. There’s a music section, too, similar to MySpace Music or the bands section on Bebo - these pages also include a feature similar to the MySpace music player, where you can post an artist’s tracks to your own page with a few clicks. There’s a Digg-like news rating feature, too, and the ability to find jobs via a partnership with Monster.

Nicktropolis

Nickelodeon is launching a new virtual world tomorrow called Nicktropolis. The Second Life comparisons are already being made, and there are also parallels to CBBC World, the virtual world for kids from the BBC. But ultimately, Nicktropolis seems to take more inspiration from Habbo Hotel or Gaia Online. These virtual worlds are smart because they give young users an avatar to hide behind, rather than posting photos as they would on MySpace or Bebo.

PicksPal

PicksPal is a free sports site where people “bet” on upcoming games. No money is involved. If they win, their point total goes up and they have bragging rights around the office. Since launching about a year ago over 100,000 people have joined the site, making daily picks on just about every kind of sporting event in the U.S. - boxing, NFL football, pro football, bass fishing, ultimate fighting, basketball, baseball, etc. The site makes money from advertising.

PicksPop

For-fun betting sites like Gottabet and PicksPal, which combine social networking with betting, are gaining popularity.

The success of PicksPal in particular has been stunning. Friends group together and bet on the winners of upcoming sporting events, or more detailed things like the number of touchdowns in a given game. A small percentage of users on PicksPal tend to be correct in their bets so often that the company started selling their predictions last year.

It’s no surprise, then, that PicksPal is expanding and launching a pop culture version of its sports betting site. The new site, called PicksPop, allows users to bet on things like “Will Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee get back together?” (pays 100/1), “Will Angelina Jolie/Brad Pitt announce their separation?” (also 100/1), and “Will 24 be in the Top 10 for the week?” (pays 1/1). All bets are for points, and each user gets 1,000 points to start. Top ranked users are listed on here.

The Find

TheFind.com is a shopping search engine that is dedicated to delivering the most satisfying online search experience for you - the time-crunched, savvy shopper.

Like most people these days, we had grown accustomed to using search engines to find just about anything. But something was not right - when we wanted to shop, we would get frustrated at having to wade through a zillion text links to find the products we wanted. The constant clicking back and forth would drive us slightly crazy. Plus, we were never quite sure that we were seeing all of the products available on the web - we were probably missing out on a lot of stores that didn't want to pay to be listed. Something had to change.

Introducing our solution - TheFind.com!

We developed a shopping search engine that delivers comprehensive lists of products and their corresponding images, ranked by the leading products, brands, stores and styles on the very first page of results. We call this technology our "Product Ranking Engine."

Our unbiased "Product Ranking Engine" crawls over 500,000 stores to find over 150 Million products web-wide.

At TheFind.com, we believe that shoppers should have access to all of the products on the web - not just the ones that pay to be there. With our unbiased and objective "Product Ranking Engine" technology, we have made that dream a reality.

Our patent-pending technology ranks the product results for your searches by the most relevant and market-leading products, brands, stores and styles for your search. These rankings can never be bought or sold. So you can feel comfortable knowing that you are covering a ton of ground in just one search.

Plus, we provide large images of these leading products so you can easily see exactly what you are shopping for. No more wading through millions and millions of text links - the best matches for your search are easily visible and are right there on the first page!

We take care of the science, so you can enjoy the art of shopping!

For the past three years, our engineers have created, tested and refined the technology under the proof-of-concept site FatLens.com. The first application of our "Product Ranking Engine" was applied to event tickets. Based on rigorous testing and extensive design modifications, we are excited to launch our new, comprehensive shopping search engine as TheFind.com.

TheChipLab

There are many sites that sell customized casino chips (just do a search), but we haven’t found any that have an online design tool to allow you to create the chip itself. TheChipLab is an online service that allow you to design your own casino chips (and sell also!) The creation tool is very flexible and layer based. It’s not as powerful as new online image editor Fauxto, which is also Flash based, but it does the job.

GoodStorm

The company launched catering primarily to nonprofits, giving charities a way to inexpensively sell custom designed tshirts at a very low wholesale price. The company also launched a widget product last summer.

The new product allows visitors to quickly design their own Tshirt using uploaded or stock images, text and special characters. If you like you can buy just one - a men’s standard Tshirt, designed to your specifications, costs $15.

Store owners can also create their own version of the design tool, with pre-uploaded images and custom pricing. We’ve created one - see the TechCrunch Tshirt store here. Upload your own images and have at it - any proceeds we receive from sales of Tshirts will go to charity.

WidgetBox

The service is the first product from startup PostApp, founded by Ed Anuff, Dean Moses and Giles Goodwin. The company is funded by Hummer Winblad Venture Partners to the tune of $1.5 million. Mitchell Kertzman, a partner with Hummer Winblad, is also on the board.

The idea is a timely one: Widgetbox is building a marketplace for web widgets to place on blogs, websites, eBay auctions and social networks. The service aims to connect the developers of these widgets with web users, taking a cut whenever transactions are involved - these situations could include subscription-based widgets or affiliate links. Around 100 widgets are currently listed, and they’re supporting every technology - HTML, JavaScript, AJAX, Flash and Java Applets. Examples include the Flash-based horoscope widget from WeLoveWidgets, the latest news from Newsvine, the top stories on Digg and a sudoku game for your visitors. The widget at the bottom of this post, for example, displays the latest posts from Mashable. In fact, many of the widgets are RSS based, allowing you to quickly reproduce content from other sites - the only cost is that all the widgets carry a Widgetbox logo.

ClearSpring

Clearspring, a service that will help you to build, deploy and track widgets. Clearspring Technologies is backed by MD-based Novak Biddle Venture Partners and a group of strategic investors.

The tracking is extremely detailed: they’ll record metrics like the number of views, user interaction and “viral spread”, which is essentially how a widget is being distributed from one user to another. But they’ll also make it super easy to deploy a widget across multiple platforms: at the moment, it’s a lot of work to distribute a module across Netvibes, MySpace, WordPress, Google and the various social networks and start pages (hi5, Piczo, Pageflakes, Multiply, Blogger, Friendster); Clearspring hopes to simplify that.

SpringWidgets (By Fox)

It's a widget site for blog. Very nice, and it's owned by Fox Interactive

Mashable Addson

In addition to dropping a new site at Mashable.com, we’ve also just launched Mashcodes, a spin-off site for social networking add-ons. Mashcodes has been in development for some time, and gives us a great platform for hosting all kinds of social networking tools - layouts, graphics, games, videos and (yup!) even widgets. We’ve still got a lot of work to do to bring the content up to standard (if you thought the Christmas MySpace layouts were bad, wait till you see out lineup!), and a few technical kinks are still being ironed out, but we thought we’d roll it out nonetheless. The platform essentially allows us to post any media - hosted here or elsewhere - and provide embed codes to social networking users. Over time, we’ll add tools for hi5, Xanga, Piczo, Tagworld, Facebook and lots of other sites.

GypsyMaps NYC

very well designed and executed mashup gives you New York Subway and Bus Maps with interactive point to point directions

RatePoint

A “Digg for reviews”. RatePoint also includes profile pages, networks of friends and personalized recommendations. Like Riffs, RateItAll and hundreds of other sites.

Vouchon

vouchon.com is a place for answers. More importantly though, when you ask others to vouchon, you're asking them to stand behind their suggestion. It's the 2007 equivalent of the 'ol spit-in-the-palm handshake. If you'd like, you can call it Handshake 2.0 (but we'd rather you didn't).

When you vouch for something, you're recommending it based on experience. That's what vouchon is all about.

Wellsphere

Wellshpere is launching an alpha version of their wellness community site. It joins a host of other health related search, training, and Q&A sites we’ve covered. Wellsphere is concerned with day-to-day sorts of health choices that make up “wellness”, the kind you don’t ask your doctor, but consult your peers about. Wellsphere is meant to help people with these choices and motivation by providing users with access to similar people and to health-related resources in their area. These resources are split between personal profiles and databases of health-related locations they’ve put together.

Their personal profiles are much like any social networking site with the addition of a blog like feature called a “Wellsphere”. Wellspheres are comment threads attached to your profile dealing with a goal you want to accomplish or some specific knowledge you have about being healthy. Any registered user can subscribe to updates on the sphere or add to the conversation by posting their own input. You can imagine there being a lot of duplicate discussions, which Wellsphere deals with by allowing members to vote for other users by “endorsing” them.

ListDump

Listdump is a community list generator based on the simple fact that everybody loves a good list. Create a list of the best how-to sites, or download sites ... Hey, you can even create a list of your personal life goals and let others help you prioritize them by voting.

For example, you can locate the nearest Starbucks, find cheap gas nearby, read your friend's MySpace blog, read movie reviews, check out neat photos, download popular blogs like Engadget, or keep track of the top iTunes hits all from your cell phone or PDA. Plusmo offers a great mobile experience because personalized content from websites is downladed to your device in advance and browsing is local and fast.

Midomi

Midomi is a newly-launched service that allows you to sing a song into your microphone and find the title. It does this by comparing your version to song signatures in a database, and allows you to buy the track online. But there’s much more to it than that: Midomi will show you the tracks submitted by other users who made a recording of that that song, allowing you to rate their performances, leave comments, and visit their profile pages. You can also message other users, build a list of favorites and build a network of fans. Submitting a recording is separate from searching - your audio searches aren’t made available to other users - but when you record a track in the studio, this is used to power Midomi’s recognition. Most amazingly, the recognition works, really, really well - much better than competing service Nayio. It’s like a cross between Last.fm and Bix.com, and worth checking out.

FuzzMail

Fuzzmail records the act of writing and lets you send it as an email. Dynamic changes, typoes, pauses and writeovers are captured and communicated. Blorq

Blorq began with a dissatisfaction with all available news readers. Several had single great features but didn’t provide a complete solution. It has turned into a bit more.

Ksolo

kSolo.com is dedicated to providing you with the ultimate online karaoke singing experience. The site is the first Web based sing along application to allow users to sing, record, and playback personalized renditions of their favorite songs.

Using state of the art streaming and recording technology, the site presents the highest audio and recording quality with the most advanced sharing capabilities available today. This, with ease of use, provides customers with a fun, complete and exciting online karaoke experience suitable for all music lovers.

The kSolo multi-featured online player, delivers sing along lyrics, recording capabilities and sharing capabilities - all you need is a mic, speakers and... a pair of lungs...

Other functions include listening to audio version, instrumental versions and more.

kSolo is an entirely legal online karaoke service. It has established agreements with leading music publishing companies, allowing access to thousands of titles enabling kSolo to keep a rich and updated song catalog you can search and browse from. You may bookmark and store recordings and may showcase your talent and choose to receive peer critique by participating in the performer showcase.

So... whether you're looking to sing in private or are looking to sing karaoke online for an audience, kSolo is the stage for you!!!

SingShot

SingShot is releasing their own variation of online karaoke tomorrow. The new service is essentially a copy of kSolo heavily influenced by the successful YouTube user interface.

All the basic functionality of the kSolo product is there. Performers can select from a library of songs that are at least about two to three years old, listen to a demo, and record their own version while following along with the lyrics on the screen. The hope is to repeat the success of other social content sites like YouTube by allowing users to share their songs to be voted and commented on by the public. The human filtering will hopefully pick out the Kelly Clarksons in a forest of William Hungs. The big differences in these two services lie in the details. First of all, kSolo spurned Flash, the now-ubiquitous platform for online video, requires a plugin and runs only on Internet Explorer. SingShot runs completely on Flash and works in all browsers, making it a breeze to set up and start running. Users just have change their Flash settings to allow the program access to their mic. While both programs allow performances to be shared, SingShot follows the simple YouTube model and allows a simple cut and paste link or embed, whereas kSolo has a clunky share feature that allows you to email a link or, after a little hunting, embed your entire playlist on a page.

Vodafone Vine

The Mobile Web isn't just about the Googles and Yahoos of this world muscling in to the lucrative mobile content market. The existing mobile network operators and handset manufacturers are also busy adjusting to the Internet, to defend their turf and just maybe get a jump on their competitors. On 31 January Vodafone will launch a new open source community portal, called Betavine. It will be a research and development space, run by Vodafone Group R&D. It aims to encourage collaboration in the area of mobile and internet communications, so they will be targeting developers and early adopter users in the Mobile Web arena.

For example, users will be able to download and test applications, plus comment and contribute on the forums and blogs. Developers can create projects and host applications, plus blog and interact with their users and the Betavine community. Indeed, interaction between developers and testers will be a key part of Betavine - Vodafone hopes it will provide them with a testing ground for the latest Mobile Web concepts and technologies.

Betavine is similar to Nokia's open source community, Maemo. It's good to see the traditional mobile companies 'opening up' a bit more in this era of Mobile Web, at least when it comes to development and new apps.

Undisposable

Undisposable.org allows you to outsource email validation against disposable email addressing (e.g. 10minutemail.com, mailinator.com) and fake accounts spread from the likes of bugmenot.com. Needless to say, the usage rates are very low.

Amazon S3

Amazon S3 is all about distributed storage. S3 saves you from the hassles and big costs of buying and maintaining storage hardware for your site's needs. YouOS is one example that secures its data on scalable Amazon S3 servers. You can see if a web site is using S3 or not by keeping track of your status bar while a page loads; S3 powered sites will frequently fetch data from http://aws.amazon.com address. R/WW's MyBlogLog for example uses S3.

RapLeaf

RapLeaf provides a distributed trust system for your site. What made eBay so successful was the trust system it brought into the online auction arena. Similarly, many other ventures need trust systems to make transactions between their visitors more secure. And making your trust portable across all these sites is a very bright idea - which is yet another advantage of power of masses in granular web.

In the same way, outsourcing this system to a 3rd party can result in decreased development time and costs.

OpenID

OpenID is a distributed authentication mechanism. It allows you to outsource your whole authentication system to this distributed platform. This results in 2 things:

  • You don't need to develop it on your own (decreased development time and cost)
  • Moreover, you decrease the sign up threshold and so attract more users (Power of Masses)

Sounds like a good deal, no? But the numbers are not supporting this goal. Even though OpenID is a widely covered topic in blogosphere, and is backed by big companies like VeriSign and SixApart and has many fans and the open source community behind, the adoption and usage rates have remained low.

FileHo

FileHo is an online one click file-hosting service. It allows users to upload, host and share files for free. FileHo offers unlimited speeds, unlimited file-size, unlimited lifetime of files and unlimited disk space for any of your needs. Also, FileHo is an ad-free site! That's why downloading process has never been so easy and fast.

Drag your lists around to rearrange your gubb home page.

Drag an item up or down within a list to change item order.

Not near a computer but need a gubb list? Send gubb a text message using your mobile phone and gubb will immediately text your list back to you. You can even tell gubb to add an item to a list via text message. Works anytime because gubb is always on and always secure!

Add up to three stars to mark the item as "priority."

Set a due date reminder by typing in the date or choosing a day from the pop-up calendar. gubb will display the due date next to the item.

Check off items that are completed, and gubb will automatically cross them out for you.

You can archive an item that you've already checked off in a task list. gubb puts the item in a separate folder, which cleans up your list without deleting the item.

With gubb, you can email yourself or other people a copy of any of your lists with one click.

Send a list to your mobile phone as a text message and take your list with you.

Have gubb email a list to your email account or add something to your list without even logging into gubb.

DoTheRightThing

dotherightthing is a place online where you can get unfiltered information about the impacts of companies on people and the world and make it worth their while to "do the right thing."

  • Consumers can learn about which companies will spend their hard-earned dollars in ways that make the world better
  • Investors can learn about which companies focus on doing the right thing today so that they'll be, or continue to be leaders in their markets tomorrow
  • Employees can learn about which companies share their passion for wanting to create more than just financial returns, and truly care about their well-being

On dotherightthing, the community rules. You determine:

  • Which companies get the focus
  • What is relevant
  • Which companies are recognized for doing the right thing

dotherightthing Inc. was founded in 2006, by Ryan Mickle and Rod Ebrahimi, to recognize companies for all the little things (and big things) that add up to make a positive impact on our lives. It is an impact-maximizing, for-profit company, aiming to provide valuable services, without compromising its core mission to help drive more sales, talented employees, and investments in companies that do the right thing. While we could have founded a non-profit to host dotherightthing.com, we strongly believe that companies don’t need to become non-profits to do the right thing.

Bebo Minicard

The Bebo Minicards, which went live on Wednesday according to the Moo crew, allow users to print 100 cards of their Bebo photos, plus text and other add-ons, for $14.99. Taking into account Bebo’s popularity in the UK, the price in UK pounds seems to take center stage. Moo has its own Bebo profile, of course, and utilizes Bebo’s photo feature to show off the product. What’s more, they’re giving away a set of 10 free Minicards to every Beboer to promote the service.

UpScoop

the reputation network Rapleaf is releasing a new service called Upscoop, which joins a number of startups (see ProfileLinker and Wink, for example) trying to add a meta layer above social networks. There are a lot of these networks, and a lot of people belong to more than one. Keeping track of your own networks, and those of your friends, is complicated.

Upscoop is designed to help you figure out which networks your friends belong to, based on their email address. You give Upscoop your email credentials (including the password) for your AOL, Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo email account. Upscoop grabs your contact list, and then searches across a number of social networks and tries to find profile pages of people that you know among the 10 million profiles they’ve indexed across the major social networks. The process of searching is not instantaneous - it actually takes a few hours.

Clicking on any result will (sometimes) bring you to the profile page for that person. You can then add them as a friend or otherwise interact with them.

Amiestreet

DRM-free MP3s sold at pure market driven prices.

The company’s business model is dead simple - Artists can upload their music for download on the site. Users download songs, with the starting price at free. When downloads pick up for popular songs, the price starts to rise, all the way up to $0.99. If a song gets to $0.30 or so, you know its popular. The artist keeps 70% of revenues after the first $5 in sales.

Amie Street has also released tools to help artists promote their songs, including an embeddable player for any song (see this MySpace page for an example) and a tool to allow artists to create Amie Street song stores on their own websites.

BooBox

A booBox is a tiny little box that will bring to your audience the wonderful world of e-commerce, without leaving your blog, using your words or pictures as a path to a shopping cart . Each item sold through your booBox will give you instant money, send to you through your affiliate program with big players such as Amazon or eBay.

When you post on your blog, you’re influencing your own audience. Tag your image and booBox send it to the e-commerce website that send a list of possible items related to your image. Each image tagged gets a booBox icon over it to show your audience where to click.
For each country, the booBox Team will choose one e-commerce store that’s able to offer the highest number of products and with the best delivery system.

Lets say you write in your blog about a new gadget that you know about or have, put an image of the gadget and tag it, the image become a booBoxlink to a store where your reader can buy the exact gadget and you can earn a good commission in this transaction.

The booBox service is not alive yet but I can honestly say - I like the idea, can't wait to see it in action and defiantly will keep my eyes on that one.

Answeru

Welcome to our AlphaBeta! So two guys at MIT got frustrated one day with how long it can take to get a simple question answered. As we sat there talking trash about search and groups and message boards and listservs, a light went on for both of us and AnswerU was born. We've had some help along the way from people at Berkeley, Harvard and MIT (Thanks Dan, Surendra, Marcos). We have created a solution for fast and accurate answers for university students toughest questions. AnswerU is a student powered and governed platform where university-specific knowledge can be found in a well organized, user-friendly site. You can post questions and receive multiple answers quickly which have been reviewed, commented upon and ranked by your community of university peers. Once your question has been answered, it is added to the AnswerPedia where it is available for future users. If you are looking to explore your university, click around a bit and see some of the ways that others at your school have used AnswerU.

Zimbra

At Zimbra, our goal is to make e-mail, calendar, contacts and other communications technologies the best they can be. We believe that by opening the technology to the community we will insure that we can maximize innovation, scale and the ability to co-exist with existing messaging systems.

Zimbra is an open source project, and is presented only in demo form at this point - if you want to run it you have to do so on your own servers.

So while Zimbra is not something you can immediately start using, you can view a hosted demo here and a flash demo here. The source code is available on the download page here.[TechCrunch]

Cargurus

CarGurus is a wiki-type site for car lovers. Includes reviews, forums and the ability to ask car-related questions. Other social auto sites include Motortopia and AutoSpies.

Mix/

Mix/ is a new mixing community that interacts with iTunes. It seems unintuitive.

Odiogo

Odiogo wants to turn your blog into audio for users to listen to on their iPods. RSS feeds and blog posts can be converted automatically using text to speech. A similar service, Talkr, hasn’t done so well, so I don’t hold out much hope. That said, it’s worth trying the demo just to hear the robotic voice say the phrase “USB humping dog”.

TechStars

TechStars is a new startup fund/incubator. TechStars is looking for flat broke entrepreneurs with just a seed of a good startup idea.

The thirty of so winning entrepreneurs (TechStars anticipates an average of three founders per idea) will travel to Colorado on May 21, 2007, and spend the summer in Boulder building out their ideas. TechStars will also give each founding group $15,000 in seed funding, and help them locating housing at the nearly University of Colorado, Boulder. TechStars will take 5% of the equity in each startup.

This is comparable to YCombinator’s model, where they give $6,000 per founder and take 6-8% of the startups equity. And the model has worked so far, with a number of promising startups launching, and YCombinator-funded Reddit being acquired by Condé Nast last Halloween.

TechStars is solidly backed, with investments from David Cohen, Brad Feld, Jared Polis (founder of Blue Mountain and ProFlowers) and David Brown. There’s a long list of mentors as well who’ve promised to help guide startups over the summer.

Amazon

Lately Amazon has been introducing a raft of 'web 2.0' features to its e-commerce website. In this post we explore how Amazon has implemented tagging, Ajax, blogs and wikis - and ask whether it's made much difference to the user experience, and to the bottom line. In previous posts, we've discussed Amazon's bold and visionary Web Services Strategy - which is creating many success stories. But this post is not about Amazon's new business, it is about the continuous innovation of their core e-commerce business. Obviously...Amazon is the biggest online store on internet!!!

Kongregate

Kongregate is a site that houses great Flash video games. At first the name seems odd for a gaming site. You congregate around the games you play to create this immense community.
Founded in 2006 and currently in a state of heavy development, Kongregate seeks to create the leading online hub for players and game developers to meet up, play games, and operate together as a community.

By wrapping user-submitted Flash games with various community features, Kongregate's site serves as a unique way for users to play great web-based games alongside friends. Anyone can add their own games to Kongregate’s library in a process that’s fast and simple.

Kongregate operates with an understanding of how difficult it can be for talented game developers - from the aspiring gamesmith to the independent studio - to get the recognition and compensation that they deserve. That's why Kongregate shares microtransaction and advertising revenue with contributing developers, who retain the full rights to their games.

Amapedia (By Amazon)

Amazon has just released a new Wikipedia clone, called Amapedia. It's described as "a community for sharing information about the products you like the most." So far Amapedia has had no promotion from Amazon, but it was discovered today by Rogers Cadenhead. Anyone with an Amazon.Com account can edit the site. Regarding the name, Amapedia appears to be a combo of the words Amazon and Wikipedia: ama[zon][wiki]pedia.

The site looks pretty raw currently and has little info in it - it is after all brand new. But a wikipedia for products makes perfect sense for Amazon. Who better to spotlight products and gather product information from the community, than Amazon? Another way to look at this: Amapedia could become the next generation of user reviews. User reviews on websites today are relatively rigid and old fashioned, so Amazon may be thinking that Amapedia will be a new platform for user reviews - it may help remove redundancy in reviews, while offering more completeness.

We'd like to see a bit more structure in the Amapedia pages, so that it is less chaotic when people edit it. For example add sections to pages. But the fact that tags are there already is fantastic - Amazon is calling this "collaborative structured tagging".

Chartu

Welcome to CHARTU, so whats the plan? Well, the idea came about from a night in a pub (like most good ideas), a couple of drinks and various conversations about the cosmos could mean only one thing ... an 'inspiring bolt of lightning'.
The basic principle is we like music, we think the general concensus around the world is people like music too. So, why not create a website which focus's purely on the music. The main point is artists/bands/groups get to 'show off' (come on people, we all know you become an artist/band/group to show off a little ;) ) their work to other people. Thats it, we just thought a chart would be a good way of doing this.
We then looked around on the Web to see what was going on, noticed that alot of the focus for he actual music was kind of looked on some big sites * cough 'MySpace' cough *
CHARTU : for joe public ...

Jaxtr

Receiving free calls and unlimited voice messages – worldwide.
Jaxtr was founded in October 2005 by Phillip Mobin and Touraj Parang with the mission to bring voice to social networks and blogs. With the free jaxtr service, users can link their phones with their online network to hear from callers worldwide while keeping their existing phone numbers private.

And jaxtr is not just about hearing from people who visit a user’s profile or blog. By adding their jaxtr link to their email signature, global friends can call our users on their phone with the click of the mouse – without downloading any software, incurring international phone charges or even registering for jaxtr.

When users change their work, home or mobile number, they simply add or update their number on jaxtr; incoming calls then get routed to the phone of their choice. They can even block callers from reaching them or specify on a per-caller basis which callers can reach them live and which get routed to voice mail.
